Most every American alive at the time remembers where he or she was when word of John F. Kennedy s assassination came. Members of the Third Infantry Regiment, the U.S. Army s official ceremonial unit, were no exception. As their fellow citizens reeled in horror and sorrow, however, the dedicated soldiers of the Third Infantry, the Old Guard, realized their professionalism and sense of duty would be called upon in this, their finest hour. Their normal duties ranged from burying soldiers at Arlington National Cemetery to welcoming visiting heads of state at the White House. The Kennedy state funeral imposed special demands. Whatever the task, it was performed with the precision and dignity these solemn events deserved. The shock they felt when they learned of the assassination had to give way to duty. Their Finest Hour was written by more than twenty members of The Old Guard privates, sergeants, lieutenants, and captains among them who were there for Kennedy s funeral.

I really liked this book. I was in college in Washington DC at the time and remember in detail the funeral parade and some other events related to this historical event. I enjoyed reading the first person recollections by members of The Old Guard who had actually participated in these events. They add something important to the history record of this event. Their Finest Hour Thomas Reid 9781595717641 Books Reviews
Great gives a very good picture of all that went on behind the event and shows the dedication of all the military personnel involved. A great read.
Thanks for the book, Tom. Jim spoke so highly of you and the others. The story of JFK shaking hands with Jim hand has so many more twists and turns soon afterwards, including the very first time my brother Jim was declared dead. Regards, Tom McElroy.
I was so blessed to see all those pics & get an inside story. What a history treasure! Would recommend it to all & especially teens who should get an inside look at military.
I have found this book to be extremely interesting. The various servicemen who took part in the JFK funeral detail their activities, including behind-the-scenes things that I had never learned before. It's not a long book, but a very "easy read". I have thoroughly enjoyed it.
