I heard of Peter Jelen through [...] after reading a couple of his short stories. Better Than God is hilarious. Every story is well plotted and interesting. There isn't a single story of the 18 in the book that didn't immediately grab my attention. He writes simply and minimally, but it's very effective. They were very easy to read, and each story was like watching a movie. I've never laughed so much while reading a book. I just kept wondering, `How did he come up with this?' the stories were extremely creative, which was very refreshing. I definitely recommend this book!Product details

Jelen's stories emerge from the macabre world Poe's fantasies conjured. 'The Loneliest One'is a soliloquy by God who has decided to commit suicide because of disappointment over humankind's failure to understand its creator. In 'Matryoshka' an editor receives a manuscript in which he reads his life story ontological questions and speculations follow. Jelen's ideas are good, always interesting, but occasionally not enough to hang as entire story on. The psychologically-challenged losers and hapless victims of many of the tales are reminiscent of characters in a Vonnegut novel. Sad chararacters; some bizarre as well--too bizarre for much poignancy. Two stellar works of the collection are the title story, 'Better Than God, and 'Backdoor Man.' The latter features Lyle Krump, an abomination out of LAST EXIT TO BROOKLYN. Krump has a serious sexual identity problem; he goes to LA to live out a fantasy by participating in a pornographic extravaganza. The story, full of authorial intrusions, is fast-paced and fun though repulsive as well, Jelen graphically describing Krump's degradation--at the hands of others, and at his, Krump's, own hand. Degradation through excess the perversion of love. The sex--multiple descriptions of both "normal" and outré sex acts (not remotely erotic)--symbol of the perversion...Jelen writes well, and is particularly good at dialogue. His ideas are excellent and bring a certain depth to the collection's tally of the detritus of life online and off in the Brave New World of the 21st century.
