The adventures of Charles Sheldon chronicled in the 4 or 5 books he wrote are simply stunning. It's as though he snuck in right at the beginning of the 20th century and explored the last unexplored places on earth. He traveled, hunted, kept logs, and later wrote of his exploits.A man of independent means, he accomplished his feats with no pretense or desire to exploit the areas he roamed. He fought tremendous obstacles of forbidding cold weather and extreme conditions with equipment and clothing we would laugh at today, but he never complained and only pushed himself harder when things got tougher. He must have been an extraordinary athlete.
Although we, here, today will never have the opportunity that Sheldon had to explore the unexplored, we can come close to living it vicariously by reading his amazing books.

Interesting review of how hunting and attitudes have changed. Being early in the exploration of the area if Alaska there was abundant wildlife present. Instead of the controlled hunting of today hunting then consisted of almost indiscriminate shooting of animals taking multiple specimens instead of stalking and taking a single trophy. However the descriptions tell of an earlier era before the massive development and access now available. Very interesting reading from a historical standpoint.
The book describes the scenery and wildlife of the Yukon 100 years ago. It tells of many exciting hunting adventures. Thebook is too long and it gets a bit boring as a lot of the experiences seem so similar.
I found this very interesting, not particularly entertaining but educational on many levels. I enjoy first person experiences like this and recommend this one. It reads quick but you can really see the place and situation through his eyes and words.
This book is a gem. The author writes clearly and well and his exploits are amazing. They made them tough back then.
What I really like is the high quality of his observations as well as his absolute love of the hunt.
A good and informative read, recommended to lovers of hunting.
Written more like a prose version of a log book than a literary work it is none the less complete with enough detail and insights into the values of the times to keep one interested. Covering the expanse of several hunting trips into total wilderness areas the author shows no bias in telling it like it was, even when some of the events weren't too flattering. It's an interesting contrast to compare the attitudes of the time to those of today in regard to conservation and hunting.
Enjoyed this read for its straightforward descriptions of the land and country where the hunts took place. Marveled at their knowledge of the area in a time when not much was known of this area. A fine account of an adventure of over a hundred years ago.
Young self-made millionaire Charles Sheldon devoted his time and wealth to natural history research. In this narrative Sheldon collects the hides and horns of as many distinctly different phenotypes of wild mountain sheep as he can find in mountain ranges of the Yukon and ships them to the Smithsonian for analysis. We must remember that 100 years ago zoologists weren't sure how many different species of wild sheep lived in North America, and particularly perplexing were what we now call Stone sheep that can sometimes have the coloration of the Rocky Mountain bighorn sheep, but horns more like the Dall sheep. Sheldon emphasized that he wasn't trophy hunting by not posing himself or anyone else with the animals he shot. None-the-less, his adventures produced great stories of hunting not only mountain sheep, but also moose,caribou, and grizzly bear in a time and place where some bands of natives still lived a traditional subsistence lifestyle and lonely isolated white trappers were lucky to find a native wife to help them survive. His narrative is enriched by companions such artist Carl Rungius, and African natural history enthusiast Frederick Courtney Selous. Sheldon's narrative is a must for lovers of wild sheep and wilderness. I suspect that America's greatest outdoor writer and sheep hunting fanatic Jack O'Connor had a well-worn copy of The Wilderness of the Upper Yukon" in which he found lots of inspiration. As it turns out, naturalists suffer the same hardship to collect big rams as do outdoor writers. Sheldon got to suffer a lot more and collect many more rams than did O'Connor.
